Why Won’t My Bluetooth Headset Pair? The 5-Second Rule Everyone Forgets

It should be simple. You unbox your new Bluetooth headset, you turn it on, and it should just… connect. Instead, you’re staring at your phone’s Bluetooth list, mashing the “scan” button while your headset blinks innocently, refusing to appear.

You are not crazy, and your device is probably not broken. You’ve just run into the single most common and poorly explained secret of all Bluetooth devices.

As someone who has walked countless people through this exact frustration, let me assure you: 99% of “it won’t pair” problems are solved by understanding one simple fact.

The Biggest Misconception: “On” Is Not “Pairing Mode”

This is it. This is the whole problem.

When you press the power button on your headset, you are simply turning it “On.” When it’s on, the headset’s first priority is to find a device it already knows. It’s looking for your phone, your laptop—whatever it was last connected to.

If it can’t find a known device, it just sits there, waiting. It is not actively looking for new devices.

“Pairing Mode” is a special “I am available and looking for a new connection” status. You must manually put the headset into this mode before your phone or PC can discover it for the first time.

The “5-Second Rule” (And How to Do It)

So, how do you force it into Pairing Mode? You need to overrule its “On” command.

For the vast majority of headsets, including models like the COMEXION BH-M100, the process is universal. Do not trust a quick tap of the power button.

  1. Start with the headset completely OFF. (This is crucial.)
  2. Press and HOLD the main power button (it’s often the Multi-Function Button, or “MFB”).
  3. You will hear a beep or a voice say “Power On.” DO NOT LET GO OF THE BUTTON.
  4. Keep holding the button for another 3-5 seconds.
  5. You will hear a second beep, a “Pairing” voice prompt, or—most importantly—you will see the LED light flash alternating red and blue.

That red-and-blue flash is the universal “I am in Pairing Mode” signal.

Now, and only now, should you go to your phone or computer’s Bluetooth menu. Hit “Scan” or “Add device,” and it will pop up almost instantly (e.g., as “M100”).

What If It Still Won’t Pair?

If you’ve successfully entered pairing mode and it’s still not working, the next step is to clear the slate.

  • On your Phone/PC: Go into your Bluetooth settings, find the headset (if it’s listed from a failed attempt), and select “Forget Device” or “Remove.” This clears your phone’s memory.
  • On your Headset: Many headsets have a “reset” function to clear their internal list of paired devices. This often involves holding the power button and the “Volume Up” button simultaneously for 5-10 seconds.
  • Reboot Everything: When in doubt, turn the headset off. Turn your phone’s Bluetooth off and back on. Then, try the “5-Second Rule” (Pairing Mode) again from scratch.

This process isn’t just a “trucker headset” issue; it applies to earbuds, speakers, and nearly everything Bluetooth. By learning the difference between “On” and “Pairing,” you’ve just solved the most frustrating part of wireless audio.
