Hydrogen Bottle "Barely Bubbles"? A User Guide to SPE/PEM and Your First Cycle
Update on Dec. 13, 2025, 11:30 a.m.
You’ve just unboxed your new hydrogen water generator, like the Vitality Fizz, excited to try it. You charge it, fill it, and press the button. And then… nothing. Or, as one user review put it, it “Barely bubbles.”
This is one of the most common reasons for 1-star reviews and returns, and it’s almost always based on a simple misunderstanding. Your new, expensive device is not broken. It just has a secret that the manual might not have made clear.
The “Barely Bubbles” Problem: A Critical First Step
Before you initiate a return, check the base of the bottle. High-end hydrogen generators use a sophisticated SPE/PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane). This membrane is the heart of the device, responsible for creating pure hydrogen while filtering out ozone and chlorine.
This membrane must be shipped moist.
To protect it from drying out during shipping, the manufacturer inserts a small white rubber plug into the base, often under the main water chamber.
As one user discovered after being disappointed by the initial lack of bubbles, “I learned I needed to remove the white rubber plug before use.” Once this plug is removed, the water can make full contact with the membrane, and the electrolysis process will begin properly, creating a full stream of hydrogen bubbles.
If your bottle isn’t bubbling, find and remove that protective plug.

Now That It’s Working: Pro-Tips from Real Users
Once you’ve solved that initial hurdle, you can move on to using your generator like a pro. Here are a few tips discovered by other users:
- Tip 1: Use the Pressure-Release Button. To infuse water with a high concentration of hydrogen (like 6000+ PPB), the bottle must operate under slight pressure. This can make the lid hard to open. Many users, like Vivian, “particularly appreciate the pressure release button on the lid, it makes it so much easier to open.”
- Tip 2: Use the Adapter. Many premium bottles, including the Vitality Fizz, come with an adapter. As user Alesia notes, this “makes it’s easy to use with store-bought water bottles.” This is perfect for travel—you can screw the generator base directly onto a standard bottle of mineral water.
- Tip 3: Charge and Use Simultaneously. Nothing is more frustrating than a dead battery when you want to use your device. User Thy highlights a key convenience feature: “you can charge it and run the hydrogen cycle at the same time. This feature saves so much time.”
The “On-Demand” Mindset
Finally, remember the physics of hydrogen. It’s an elusive gas. The small 7.78oz (230ml) size of these generators is intentional. They are “on-demand” tools, not storage containers. For maximum benefit, you should drink the water within 5-10 minutes of the cycle finishing, while the hydrogen concentration is at its peak.
